Receh.in—The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) in the United States has advised internet users around the world, including in Indonesia, to use adblock during the Christmas and New Year holidays.
The agency cited a new cybercrime scheme that uses ads on websites. The perpetrators mimic well-known brand ads, such as those for cryptocurrency exchanges.
"When users search for these businesses or services, the ads appear at the top of the search results and almost cover the content," the FBI said on its official website. When the ads are clicked on, users are taken to a website that is made to look like the official company page. They are then asked to download software that contains malware.
"The download page looks official and the links or buttons are named according to the program the user wants to download," the agency said. Once clicked, "the perpetrators gain access to steal the victim's money."
The FBI also recommended that users employ ad blockers, such as AdBlock, which is used by over 60 million people. AdBlock has the following functions:
- It blocks pop-ups, ads, and banners that are disruptive or even removes video ads on YouTube, Facebook, Twitch, and others.
- It blocks third-party trackers and protects privacy.
- It makes keyword searches, or browsing, safer by blocking malware-laden, fraudulent, and cryptocurrency mining ads.
- It speeds up page loading time.
- It personalizes the experience with filters, whitelists, dark mode, and other color themes.
- It backs up and syncs whitelists and specific ad blocking rules across Chrome profiles.
- It gets support from the AdBlock team and Help Center.
