Receh.in - Indonesia becomes the first Southeast Asian country to launch smoke-free tobacco product IQOS ILUMA, according to PT HM Sampoerna Tbk. (HMSP).
"Investing in a new product marketed domestically is a business transformation step for the company," said Sampoerna's President Director Vassilis Gkatzelis during a public presentation in Jakarta on Monday (20/2/2023).
He explained that the development of smoke-free tobacco product IQOS ILUMA involved more than 980 scientists, engineers, technicians, and support staff, including those from Indonesia.
Vassilis said the IQOS ILUMA product is a continuation of the IQOS Club, which has been launched in ten major cities in Indonesia on a limited basis.
According to him, the innovative smoke-free tobacco product contains nicotine. Although it can cause addiction, nicotine is not the main cause of smoking-related diseases.
"If you don't smoke, don't start. If you smoke, quit. However, if you don't quit, switch to a better alternative. It's important to remember that smoke-free products are not risk-free and are only intended for adult smokers who choose to continue using tobacco or other nicotine products," he explained.
For your information, HMSP has recorded a total domestic investment of USD10.5 billion or equivalent to IDR 159.1 trillion. The value is an accumulation of investments since 2008, particularly in the tobacco industry ecosystem. Currently, HMSP employs more than 65,800 direct and indirect workers with seven production facilities operated directly, including a smoke-free product factory in Karawang that was recently inaugurated, as well as 38 Cigarette Production Partners owned by local entrepreneurs in 28 cities or regencies in Java Island.
