As of October 2024, Google Search’s market share dropped below 90% — its lowest level since 2015 — sparking speculation that users are increasingly turning to AI tools like ChatGPT for information instead of traditional search engines.
According to StatCounter, Google Search’s market share saw only a modest increase to 90.15% by February 2025, indicating a stagnation in its once-dominant growth.
Meanwhile, a study by investment bank Evercore found that 8% of respondents now use ChatGPT as their primary tool for searching information, up from 7% six months earlier.
Additional data from OneLittleWeb shows a massive 80.92% year-over-year increase in AI chatbot usage between April 2024 and March 2025, totaling 55.2 billion visits.
In contrast, web traffic to traditional search engines such as Google and Microsoft Bing declined by 0.51% year-over-year to 1.86 trillion visits during the same period.
📉 Google Still Leads, But Chatbots Are Closing In
Despite the growing popularity of AI, the daily usage volume of chatbots like ChatGPT still significantly trails that of search engines. AI tools account for only 2.96% of total search visits, compared to Google’s overwhelming share.
- Average daily visits to search engines: 5.5 billion
- Average daily visits to AI chatbots: 233.1 million
Between April 2024 and March 2025, Google Search remained the world’s most-used search engine with 1.6315 trillion visits, though it posted a 1.41% annual decline. Here’s the breakdown:
- Google: 1.6315 trillion visits (▼ 1.41%)
- Yahoo: 37 billion (▼ 22.5%)
- Microsoft Bing: 60.1 billion (▲ 2.77%)
- Yandex: 41.3 billion
🤖 ChatGPT Dominates AI Chatbot Space
Among AI-powered tools, OpenAI’s ChatGPT continues to lead, recording 47.7 billion visits — a whopping 86.32% market share among AI chatbots. Other major players are growing rapidly as well:
- Microsoft Copilot: 920.4 million visits (▲ 1,038.72%)
- Blackbox AI: 221.5 million (▲ 461.38%)
- Grok (xAI): 216.5 million (▲ 353,878.60%)
- Monica: 164.5 million (▲ 229.83%)
- Meta AI: 108.9 million (▲ 142,430.21%)
To remain relevant, both Google Search and Bing have started integrating generative AI features, such as Search Generative Experience (SGE) and AI Overviews. These features are credited with helping stabilize search traffic starting late 2024.
📌 Why Users Prefer ChatGPT Over Google
A survey by TechRadar (published by Future) found that efficiency and specificity are the key reasons users are shifting from Google to AI chatbots like ChatGPT.
Respondents in the U.S. and U.K. said AI tools deliver faster, more targeted answers without the need to scroll through multiple links and filter results manually — a common friction point in conventional search engines.
“I can find the key information I need almost instantly, instead of reading through a dozen web pages,” said a U.S. respondent.
Similarly, U.K. users noted that ChatGPT provides more direct and personalized results, compared to Google’s broader, more general search approach.
